Arts Center Exhibits Peter Max Archival Posters and Painted Album Covers

Enjoy the vivid imagery of Peter Max in this rare exhibition of vintage posters and album covers culled from the artist's personal collection. Much of this early work is the genesis for Max's later focus on humanitarian, environmental, and world peace issues.

Featuring music and cultural luminaries from the 60s, Max's artwork offers an intimate glimpse into the heart of the decade that ushered in unprecedented change -- artistically, musically, politically, and culturally.

These iconic album covers -- Janis Joplin on her Harley, an early Rolling Stones album cover, the members of Crosby, Stills, and Nash sitting languidly on a front porch -- are given new context by Max's psychedelia. A rare selection of vintage posters from the Max archive will also be exhibited -- an early look at the nascent humanitarian's growth as an artist and global activist, rooted in his early childhood.

European born, Peter was raised in Shanghai, China, where he spent his first ten years in a pagoda-style house situated amidst a Buddhist monastery, a Sikh temple and a Viennese cafe. At the age of ten, Peter and his parents traveled to a Tibetan mountain camp at the foothills of the Himalayas. After their return, the family left on a voyage, around India, the continent of Africa, and Israel, where Peter studied art and developed a love and fascination for astronomy.

In addition to our exhibition, we will host a benefit sale of Peter Max original paintings, signed prints, and posters to raise funds for children's art education initiatives on January 20-22, 2006.

Nestled within the confines of the Arts Center itself, Project Creo: Communications asks a difficult question: does contemporary communication -- with attendant bells, whistles, and LED displays -- enhance or hinder personal interaction?

The Arts Center Members' Show: Celebrations showcases the work of local and regional artists -- a holiday tradition of fine art, original work and handcrafted items.

Exhibition: November 11, 2005 - January 22, 2006

Opening Reception: November 11 5:30-7:30
