THE EXHIBITION

At a time of renewed respect for the fragile beauty of every day life, National Geographic photographer David Alan Harvey's poignant photos gently reveal the soul of cultures both familiar and exotic.

National Geographic staff photographer (1978-86) and Magazine Photographer of the Year (National Press Photographer's Association), Harvey has focused his lens for the past 15 years on Latin America, Cuba, and the Spanish and Portuguese diaspora.

His work is the subject of numerous books, including The Mysterious Mayas (1977), America's Atlantic Isles (1982), Cuba (1999), and his latest release, Phaidon's Divided Soul (2003), and has appeared in Life, The New York Times, Sports Illustrated and numerous National Geographic books.

Harvey's exhibition at The Arts Center includes a curated selection of his work from Cuba, Mexico, Brazil, Chile, Spain, Puerto Rico and Portugal, all showcasing Harvey's trademark, a keen sense of the personal - his self-described "ballet of street photography" scenes.

Employing a direct documentary style infused with a lyrical sensibility, Harvey's work often juxtaposes spectacular backgrounds against humble slices of daily movement throughout .

THE MASTER ARTIST CLASS

Join David Alan Harvey for an intensive hands-on Master Artist class designed to assist photographers in refining their personal photographic style and mastering new photographic skills under expert guidance.

Daily walking assignments, critiques of work and classroom instruction combine to create an unparalleled learning opportunity for area photographers.

The Master Artist Class series at The Arts Center St. Petersburg brings visual artists of national and international renown to the St. Pete area. This program includes a wide range of media such as blown and solid worked hot glass, painting, digital photography, jewelry/metalsmithing, printmaking, drawing and sculpture.

Master artists often also present their work in an exhibition in one of The Arts Center's five galleries, which are free and open to the general public.

These Master Artist intensive classes expose regional artists, devotees, and instructors to new ideas and new techniques from the wider visual arts community. The program fosters experimentation and innovation, helping the careers or goals of working and emerging artists long after their class ends. Many utilize their new-found skills in their own teaching careers, or go on to exhibit in shows of their own.
