Beginning Printmaking

Cat Thompson

Tuesday, 7pm to 9:30pm

Session 1 or 2 • Levels 1-5

Course code 1013

This studio course introduces basic printmaking processes and equipment, with equal emphasis on concept, technique and the pleasure of creating art. Students are introduced to a variety of print media and methods, specifically monotype and relief printing (linotypes), and various approaches to making and printing plates in each medium. A brief overview of the history of printmaking will be discussed and examples of a variety of original works will be available to the students.

Students develop an understanding of the medium and learn good studio habits; the safe and responsive handling of tools, materials and grounds; and the knowledge required for basic manipulation of the processes used in the production of a printed image. Beginning printmaking is amazingly easy and fun, we will explore the use of color, form and shape while producing original works of art. The wonderfully facile methods of monotyping will augment drawing and painting skills; however, these are not necessary to take this course. There is no prerequisite.
