Working from direct observation is emphasized. Various still life objects--fruit, bottles, blocks, plaster casts and drapery will be used to give students a full range of subject matter to explore. Repetitions and practice will help students to improve their drawing skills. The historical background of drawing techniques will be discussed along with slide presentations to introduce students to drawing techniques of various cultures and individual artists. Vine (or willow) charcoal and an 18 x 24" medium weight drawing pad are required for the first class. Lessons work gradually from basic to complex forms; from simple to more intricate compositions. Students will explore a range of styles and drawing methods learning through instructor demonstrations. Historical and natural drawing materials are emphasized, providing students a solid foundation in drawing tradition. Drawing materials include wood, mineral, feather quills and brush. Natural red chalks and quills will be fashioned by hand, giving students unique and personal drawing tools. Red chalk and quills will be provided. Doug Land, Rebecca Skelton, and Dean Fortune team up to enliven your figure drawing experience. Experiment with color marks, distortion, mono-printing, 3-D drawing, and collage. First two weeks, students will experiment with trois crayon on tinted paper and collaborative collage. Then, students will learn about warm and cool faces, expressive form. During the last two weeks, students will experiment with copper repoussé and mono-printing. Explore the use of gesture, contour, volume studies, simplified shapes, general proportions, prevarication and expression to describe and interpret the model. Different materials and approaches are used in each class. Students of all levels are invited to take this class, and previous drawing experience is helpful. Instructor will provide comment, instruction, and suggestions as requested. Advanced students will be asked to also draw hands when possible. Students will work from an undraped model. All skill and experience levels are welcome. Student instruction, direction, and suggestions will be individual and specific to your current experience and training. Materials list workshopsSilverpoint Drawing WorkshopJoseph WeinzettleSaturday, January 24, 12:00pm to 4:30pmCourse code 169 • Levels 1-5This workshop will use silver styluses for drawing on prepared (or gesso coated) grounds. Demonstrations will show how to cut and fit sterling silver wire into wooden holders. Students only need to supply their own paper or board. Silverpoint works best on prepared grounds, so it is strongly recommended that students bring their papers or boards coated with a professional grade gesso or white paint such as zinc white gouache or Chinese white watercolor. Silverpoint is a traditional drawing technique used by Jan van Eyck, Leonardo and Albrecht Durer for its beautiful line and hatching. Samples will be presented and discussed. Class exercises will be drawn from still lifes and plaster casts. Materials list available before class Drawing with Natural Red Chalk WorkshopJoseph WeinzettleSaturday, April 18, 12:00pm to 4:00pmCourse code 110 • Levels 1-5This workshop will use natural (not commercially manufactured) red chalk pieces for drawing. Demonstrations will show how to cut chalk pieces into drawing size sticks which can then be fit into a bamboo holder. Students only need to supply their own paper. Natural red chalk, also called sanguine, is a traditional drawing technique used by Leonardo, Michelangelo and Antoine Watteau for its supple contour line and hatching. Samples will be presented and discussed. Class exercises will be drawn from still lifes and plaster casts. Materials list available before class |
