Silverpoint Drawing Workshop

Joseph Weinzettle

Saturday, January 24, 12:00pm to 4:30pm

Course code 169 • Levels 1-5

This workshop will use silver styluses for drawing on prepared (or gesso coated) grounds. Demonstrations will show how to cut and fit sterling silver wire into wooden holders. Students only need to supply their own paper or board. Silverpoint works best on prepared grounds, so it is strongly recommended that students bring their papers or boards coated with a professional grade gesso or white paint such as zinc white gouache or Chinese white watercolor.

Silverpoint is a traditional drawing technique used by Jan van Eyck, Leonardo and Albrecht Durer for its beautiful line and hatching. Samples will be presented and discussed. Class exercises will be drawn from still lifes and plaster casts.

Tuition $80 members, $110 nonmembers

Drawing with Natural Red Chalk Workshop

Joseph Weinzettle

Saturday, April 18, 12:00pm to 4:00pm

Course code 110 • Levels 1-5

This workshop will use natural (not commercially manufactured) red chalk pieces for drawing. Demonstrations will show how to cut chalk pieces into drawing size sticks which can then be fit into a bamboo holder. Students only need to supply their own paper. Natural red chalk, also called sanguine, is a traditional drawing technique used by Leonardo, Michelangelo and Antoine Watteau for its supple contour line and hatching. Samples will be presented and discussed. Class exercises will be drawn from still lifes and plaster casts.
